Senior Series - Asma Khan

Swimming has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. When I was four years old, I began swimming lessons, and when I was six years old, I joined my first swim team. Throughout my years of swimming, it has brought me countless opportunities such as meeting new people, traveling, and making friendships that last a lifetime. I am beyond thankful for the opportunity I had to compete in the sport I love with a team that has become like a second family to me for the past four years.

As most probably know/have heard, Hawken Swimming is known for its state-winning streak. Going into my freshman year, this was something I was nervous about. I was afraid that my joy for swimming, the sport I love, would diminish due to intense practicing and our hunger for continuing the streak; however, I was completely wrong because this was quite the opposite. As early as day one of my Hawken career, I knew that my teammates, coaches, and trainers were there to support me in not only becoming a better athlete, but also in every other circumstance. While everyone yearned for another state title year after year, this was not the main priority of our athletic season and the short amount of time together. Instead, we focused on how to become better as individuals, and as a team in and out of the pool.

To me, "Fair Play," Hawken's motto, encompasses the idea that everyone should have equal opportunities and strive to be their best self. To further elaborate, I believe that this means each individual should work towards inclusion, honesty, kindness, and more. Fair Play is not only something that Hawken has emphasized in an academic environment, but also in an athletic setting. Hawken athletics taught me how to be a fierce yet empathetic competitor. While we always aim for the best possible outcome, for example, a win, having good sportsmanship has always been a primary focus. Throughout my time at Hawken, I learned how to not give into other teams', athletes', and others' bad sportsmanship and learned that it is always important to show respect, kindness, and empathy for my fellow competitors. Although others may boast and brag about their successes, Hawken taught me that it is still important to celebrate, but in a way with intent to not purposefully harm others or by gloating. A small example that portrays Hawken's Fair Play in action in this sport is the team, including myself, always congratulating our competitors after races and competitions.

Throughout my athletic career, and especially this past season due to it being my senior year/final season, I gained new and developed previously acquired leadership skills. Being a captain this year, I knew I had to step up and lead my team. I quickly learned that the team tends to follow the same path, energy, and mentality that its leaders exhibit. As a result, I knew I always had to show up and demonstrate excellent qualities no matter what the circumstance may be. Although it was tough at times such as during bad days, in my opinion, it was definitely worth it to have a result of the team competing well and being closer to one another. In addition, throughout my career, especially my time as captain, I enhanced my communication skills. I learned how to find the best way to communicate with my teammates and how to bring up our thoughts and ideas to our coaches. With this, I also learned how to problem-solve. Whether it be something as simple as picking a pre-meet snack or figuring out a lane order where everyone in the lane swims different strokes, problems were solved through communication. I owe part of having strong communication skills, problem-solving skills, and figuring out how to connect with others to Hawken Swimming. This team allowed me to grow as an individual.

Being a part of Hawken swimming and Hawken athletics for the past four years has been one of the most meaningful experiences I have taken part in. Reflecting on my career, I can say that I am happy and content with every step of the process. I have learned so much throughout these past four years and am honored to have been part of such an amazing team. I cannot wait to see how the legacy continues. Go Hawks!
